Its main objective is to determine the energy spectrum of gamma rays produced by astroparticles that interact in the Earth's atmosphere.

Measuring this spectrum is of interest for both cosmic ray physics and medical physics, since the spectrum of radiation absorbed by humans can be inferred from the spectrum. The detector used is one based on lead glass, with photomultipliers that look inside to detect gamma-ray interactions in the glass.
